Kumbakonam Kadappa



Kadappa  is  a very popular dish in Kumbakonam, TamilNadu ... this is an excellent side dish for Idly or Dosa.  This taste very similar to Kurma .


Kumbakonam  Kadappa

Yellow moong dhal --  ¼ cup ( Soak for half an hr )

Potato – 1  ( chopped )

Tomato -  1 ( chopped )

Carrot  -  1   ( chopped )

Turmeric powder --  2 pinches

Shallots / small onion --- 10 ( chopped )

Garlic cloves  -- 1 ( or upto 5 )

Ginger -  ½   inch

Curry leaves few.

Lemon juice  --  few drops.

Salt to taste.

Garnishing:  coriander and pudhina leaves few.

Cinnamon -  ½ inch

Fennel seeds / Sombu / Sonf – ¼ tsp

Green chilli – 2

Fried gram dal ( Pottu kadalai ) – 2 tsp

Grated coconut -  ¼ cup

Poppy seeds /khus khus -  1 tsp

Oil – 2 tbsp

Cloves – 1  ( whole )

Cardamom – 1 ( whole )

Bay leaf -  1

Star anise  -  1 petal 

    

In Pressure Pan, heat oil and sauté green chillies and fried gram dal. 
Grind this along with coconut,   poppy seeds and grind to a smooth paste.

 

In the same pan,..Heat oil and sauté whole cloves, star anise, cardamom , bay leaves, … saute for a minute ,… add cinnamon, fennel seeds … give a stir.  

Add small onions, ginger , garlic and sauté till transparent. 

Now add chopped tomato ,  carrot , potato , coconut paste, turmeric powder,  salt, curry leaves, soaked moong dal . 
Add water …. Close the lid and cook for 2 whistles.

 Garnish with coriander and mint leaves.

 Add few drops of lemon juice according to taste. 
 
Consistency should be like kurma.  

Serve with Idly or Dosai.
